Your WordPress Website Is Not “Done” When It Goes Live

Your website is live. It looks well, loads fast, and does a good job of representing your business. So that’s it sorted, yeah?

Not really. A WordPress website needs regular upkeep to stay secure, perform well, and keep bringing in traffic. Without it, things can go wrong quietly in the background — and by the time you notice, the damage is already done.

This is exactly what a WordPress maintenance plan is designed to prevent. At Craft Digital, we work with businesses across Ireland to keep their WordPress sites running properly, month after month. Here is why it matters.

What Is a WordPress Maintenance Plan?

A WordPress maintenance plan is an ongoing service that keeps your website updated, secure, backed up, and performing well. It typically covers core WordPress updates, plugin and theme updates, security monitoring, regular backups, performance checks, and uptime monitoring.

For Irish businesses that rely on their website to generate enquiries, sales, or bookings, a maintenance plan is one of the most practical investments you can make.

5 Reasons Your WordPress Website Needs Regular Maintenance

1. Security Vulnerabilities Are Found Every Week

WordPress runs more than 40% of all websites on the internet, which makes it a constant target for hackers and automated bots. Most successful attacks do not happen because of sophisticated hacking. They happen because a plugin, theme, or the WordPress core itself was left out of date.

New vulnerabilities are discovered regularly. Without someone keeping on top of updates and monitoring your site, those gaps stay open.

A WordPress maintenance plan means your site is patched and monitored consistently. The cost of cleaning up a hacked website, in terms of time, money, and lost trust, is significantly higher than the cost of preventing it.

Irish businesses should also be aware that under GDPR, a data breach on your website can carry serious consequences. Keeping your site secure is not just good practice; it is a legal responsibility.

2. Website Speed Affects Sales and Enquiries

Page speed has a direct impact on how many visitors stay on your site and take action. Research shows that most users will leave a page if it takes longer than three seconds to load. For small and medium businesses in Ireland trying to compete online, a slow website is a real commercial disadvantage.

WordPress sites accumulate bloat over time. Databases fill up with unnecessary data, plugins conflict with each other, and images go unoptimised. Regular maintenance addresses all of this, keeping your site lean and fast.

Speed is also a ranking factor in Google Search, so a faster site supports your SEO as well.

3. Technical Issues Quietly Damage Your Google Rankings

Google does not just look at your content when deciding where to rank your site. It also looks at how well your site is built and maintained. Broken links, crawl errors, missing redirects, and outdated XML sitemaps can all drag your rankings down over time.

For businesses targeting search terms like “WordPress maintenance Ireland,” “web design Ireland,” or local keywords for their town or county, keeping the technical side of the site in good shape is just as important as the content itself.

A maintenance plan keeps these issues identified and resolved before they have time to affect your visibility.

4. Downtime and Errors Damage Your Reputation

A plugin conflict, a failed update, or a server issue can take your site offline with no warning. If you do not have someone monitoring it, you might not find out until a customer or client tells you.

Regular backups and uptime monitoring mean that problems are caught quickly and your site can be restored with minimal disruption. For businesses that take bookings or enquiries through their website, even a few hours of downtime can mean lost revenue.

Think of maintenance the same way you would think of servicing your car. You do not wait for it to break down on the motorway before you bring it in.

5. It Frees You Up to Run Your Business

Managing WordPress updates, running security scans, checking performance, and monitoring uptime all take time and technical knowledge. For most business owners in Ireland, that is not where your energy is best spent.

When you have a maintenance plan in place with a team like Craft Digital, you can focus on your customers and your work, knowing your website is being looked after. No scrambling when something breaks. No uncertainty about whether everything is up to date.

Who Needs a WordPress Maintenance Plan in Ireland?

Any Irish business with a live WordPress website should have some form of ongoing maintenance in place. This is especially important if:

Your website generates leads, bookings, or sales

You collect customer data or process payments online

You rely on organic search traffic to find new customers

You do not have an in-house developer to manage the site

Whether you are based in Dublin, Cork, Galway, or anywhere else in Ireland, the risks of an unmaintained WordPress site are the same.

Talk to Craft Digital About WordPress Maintenance in Ireland

IMPORTANT UPDATE: the Trading Online Voucher scheme will be closing for applications on October 31st 2024. Act fast!

Did you know that while consumer trends highlight an increase in online spending from month to month, only 23% of small Irish businesses sell online? Not only that, but it’s thought that of online purchases made in Ireland, up to 70% of these are done in overseas markets. That sounds like a lot of lost business to us!

In order to encourage and support Irish businesses to develop their online trading offer, the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) has developed a financial incentive called the Trading Online Voucher scheme. Recent changes to the scheme have now made it easier and more affordable to avail of, meaning it’s the perfect time to develop your business’s digital footprint and start selling online.

Not sure if your business is eligible or what you can use the grant for? Here’s everything you need to know about the Trading Online Voucher scheme.

What is the Trading Online Voucher scheme?

Under the Government’s National Digital Strategy, the scheme helps small Irish businesses trade online, increase sales and reach new markets via digital methods. It offers financial assistance of up to €2,500 (with co-funding of 50% from the business) along with training and advice to help businesses sell online more effectively. This grant cuts the cost of developing a business’s online trading capacity by half, making it very cost-friendly for small Irish businesses looking to get started online.

Who can apply for the Trading Online Voucher scheme?

Irish businesses must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the Trading Online Voucher scheme:

– Limited or no e-commerce presence

Regardless of your writing skills, there are a lot of factors that affect how content is perceived. While some marketing experts will prioritize search engine optimisation and semantics, the majority of website owners would like to have well-written content.

But in order to create quality content, you have to know your audience. Certain articles will not fly with younger generations (take, for example, those on pension funds) and older generations will not enjoy those geared towards readers in their teens (news on the latest Instagram influencer). The same goes for the type of industry you’re writing for, the gender of your target audience or the location of the readers – these varying demographics may have different priorities when it comes to the content they seek out.

However, in this post, we’ll focus on age being the primary demographic factor in our audience. If you want to create online posts that are well optimised for both younger and older generations, then continue reading to get our top tips!

Characteristics Of Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers are generations between 1946 and 1964. Depending on who is reading this, they could be your parents and grandparents – or maybe you’re one yourself!

For them, the internet is a relatively new thing and its invention is a relatively fresh memory of theirs. While more and more people are adapting to web content, there is still a gap in how people perceive it. Older generations prefer reading articles that are geared towards traditional forms of articles and novels. This is mostly due to the fact that they’re used to purchasing books and reading old-fashioned news columns rather than seeking out online or in-app content.
Baby Boomers are more tolerant in terms of article length. If they are interested in a topic, they won’t mind giving it 10 minutes or more. This makes them an ideal audience for ultimate guides and long-form content.

Characteristics Of Gen Z

When we say Generation Z, we refer to all individuals born in the period of the mid-1990s to early 2000s. They are in their 20s and are regarded as one of the bigger groups of web users.

Gen Z is highly tech-savvy. In fact, a lot of them prefer video content to written content. However, most of them still read articles if they find the content amusing or engaging enough.

Keep in mind that these individuals are the polar opposite of Baby Boomers: they lack a long attention span, usually don’t like reading excessively long articles and are more interested in instant gratification. For them, short-form content is ideal which is why social media platforms such as Twitter work especially well.

How Can You Create Content That Suits Both Groups?

While it’s really easy to create content for one of these two groups, catering to both of them is extremely hard. The age gap is noticeable. These groups have grown up in totally different times and the way we approach written word (and content in general) has completely changed.

So, how do you create something that is good for both of them? Here are 4 factors you need to consider:

Ideal Content Length

While middle-aged and elderly people have a lot of patience, this isn’t true for Generation Z. Ideally, you should find a compromise between the two groups. Your articles should be somewhere between 500 to 1000 words; anything above that and you might lose Gen Z.

Writing Style

Young people love slang and catchy titles. But the Baby Boomers may not be familiar with such expressions. So, in order to find a middle ground, use phrasing that is free-flowing but that isn’t especially modern.

Try avoiding slang and phrases that have been invented in the last 5 years. The same goes for archaic phrases. Your best bet is using correct, proper English grammar that should be understandable to everyone.

No matter what, make sure to be direct, interesting and to drive a point with every sentence. Empty phrases and sentences will lose your readers regardless of their age. In terms of the writing style, you can never go wrong with engaging content.

Formatting

Formatting is another important element. As already mentioned, younger readers will prefer catchy phrases and short paragraphs. In fact, they might prefer 2 to 3 sentences per paragraph.

On the other hand, people in the older generation tend to prefer to read longer, meaningful paragraphs and without too many visual aids. For them, constant use of bold or italic can become a hassle as it will become increasingly harder to read and may disrupt the flow of the sentence for them. Try to find a middle ground between the two approaches.

Visual Aids

Lastly, you can’t forget visual content, that is pictures and videos. Visual aids are always a good way to break up the text. However, you should still use them in moderation.

While younger generations like memes and lots of stuff on their screen, the elderly would prefer an image to add content here and there.

Instead of stuffing the article with all sorts of stuff, make sure to add one picture and a video that will work as an additional stimulation for the younger generation while not discouraging Baby Boomer readers.

And there you have it!

While creating content that caters and appeals to a wide age range may seem impossible, with enough planning and thought, it’s easily achievable. It’s also important to remember that content is king and if done correctly, should be evergreen and ever-engaging to people from all walks of life!
